Softball loses two

The MVNU softball team (14-24, 8-18) fell to Huntington University (19-15-1, 14-11) in a doubleheader over the weekend. The team also honored their lone senior, Courtney Rengert.

The Lady Cougars’ lone run came when freshman Sarah Boue sacrificed a fly ball to bring home freshman Maddie Johnston.

Huntington won the first game 5-1.

Pitching for the Lady Cougars was sophomore Jennifer Kurelic, who led the Cougars with 12 strikeouts.

The second game mirrored the first as Huntington scored two runs in the first inning. But, MVNU came back with energy and determination.

Boue and freshmen Meghan May tied the score in the third inning with one run each. The fourth inning gave the Lady Cougars the lead as sophomore Alison Harris crossed the plate after a hit from sophomore Cassidy Cain.

But Huntington scored three runs in the following innings to claim a 5-3 victory.

The Lady Cougars look to bounce back as they travel to Saint Francis University tomorrow afternoon. The team hopes to seal their place in the Crossroads League tournament.

MVNU currently sits in eighth place, just two games behind Saint Francis who claims seventh.
